Sonia is an immensely wealthy widow whose spending keeps the small kingdom of Marshovia afloat economically. When she decides to move to Paris to find a husband, the king dispatches prince Danilo –a notorious Casanova– to seduce and bring her back home.
The best musical helmed by the great Ernst Lubitsch, The Merry Widow is frothy, funny, and tuneful from start to finish. "Witty and incandescent...heady as the foam on champagne, fragile as mist, and as delicately gay as a good-natured censor will permit." – The New York Times

Capturing a single day at Waterloo station, Terminus (d. John Schlesinger, 1961) combines two kinds of documentary filmmaking: a sort of cinema verit, a 'true' record of life passing by, and little stories that emerge, vanish, then reappear later in the film. Its many different perspectives - close-ups, long-shots, high and low angles - keep things lively. Every time you watch it you notice some new, pleasing detail. Unlike the GPO Film Unit's Night Mail (d. Harry Watt, 1936), there is no narration. Instead, Terminus's carefully chosen on-location sound recordings complement, and are equal to, the images.

Mr and Mrs Shizuma, and their niece Yasuko, make their way through the ruins of Hiroshima, just after the atomic bomb has dropped. Five years later, Yasuko is living with her aunt and uncle, and her senile grandmother, in a village containing many of the bomb survivors. Yasuko does not appear to be affected by the bomb, but the Shizuma's are worried about her marriage prospects, as she could succumb to radiation sickness at any time.
Extremely powerful film by Imamura which exposes the effects of Hiroshima's bombing, but like the characters, does not dwell obsessively on the event. There is no shock value to this film. That would have been too easy. This is as subtle an expression as you will find, hence heightening the effectiveness.

A comedic biopic focused on the life of fictional jazz guitarist Emmett Ray. Ray was an irresponsible, free-spending, arrogant, obnoxious, alcohol-abusing, miserable human being, who was also arguably the best guitarist in the world. We follow Ray's life: bouts of getting drunk, his bizzare hobbies of shooting rats and watching passing trains, his dreams of fame and fortune, his strange obsession with the better-known guitarist Django Reinhardt, and of course, playing his beautiful music.
Johan and Esther have been married for years, and live with their children in a Mennonite community from the north of Mexico. Against the law of God and man, Johan falls in love with another woman.
I was amazed by Silent Light – the setting, the language, the delicacy of the interactions between the people on screen, the drama of redemption. And most of all by Carlos Reygadas's extraordinarily rich sense of cinema, evident in every frame. A surprising picture, and a very moving one as well. — Martin Scorsese
Koyaanisqatsi is director Godfrey Reggio's debut as a film director and producer. Koyaanisqatsi is the first film of the Qatsi trilogy, and was released in 1983. Koyaanisqatsi was the first full-length commercial nonverbal film. Koyaanisqatsi cinematographer and editor Ron Fricke captures 90 minutes of stunning visual images of North America, set to a moving score composed by Philip Glass. The Director's Premium Edition looks to be Open Matte, but is far sharper than the MGM. I understand it is a limited edition that comes in a paper sleeve signed by the director. It has no Extra Features, the audio is also 5.1 but the picture quality is outstanding and the 1.33 looks far better for composition. This version is the one to have. It has a few extra scenes not in the retail DVD, and has far more picture included in the shots. Because the movie was shot for an Open Matte presentation, this 1.33:1 format preserves a good 40% more of the shots above and below where the retail was cut off to provide the 16:9 "enhanced".
